The Winter Soldier will return in ‘Captain America: Civil War’… but will he eventually pick up the shield?
Ever since ‘Civil War’ was first announced, Marvel fans have wondered whether the ambitious movie will adapt any of the events from the comic books. Lining up Captain America and Iron Man for a momentous face off, ‘Civil War’ also sees the return of the Winter Solider himself, Bucky Barnes.
But what does that mean for Captain America?
During an interview with Asian website Sina, the Russo brothers revealed that the Winter Soldier will return, along with some other familiar faces.
“We’ve been preparing for the movie since the last one debuted last year,” said Anthony Russo. “So, we’ve been working on it for a long time now. We’re very happy how it’s coming along. Captain America 3 is gonna be called Captain America: Civil War and it’s going to star Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson will be back, Winter Soldier [Sebastian Stan] will be back, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man will also be joining us in the next film.”
Of course, his mere presence seems to suggest that the events of the ‘Civil War’ comic books might be echoed on the big screen. But when asked whether the upcoming ‘Captain America’ sequel will introduce any new elements, Joe Russo managed to remain tight-lipped.
“The new element in this film is that Captain America and Iron Man get into a fight with each other,” he explained. So far, so obvious… and unfortunately, it looks as though he won’t spill any other details. At least, for the time being.
Obviously, Marvel comic book fans will have some knowledge of the events of ‘Civil War’. And in particular, the fact that Steve Rogers is killed, leading to Bucky Barnes taking up his shield and becoming the next Captain America. But will this happen onscreen?
It’s no secret that Chris Evans is nearing the end of his Marvel contract… and that means they either have to convince him to sign up for another slew of movies, or begin to sow the seeds for his eventual replacement.
But could this be a good time to hand over the shield to someone else?
The Winter Soldier himself, Sebastian Stan, is said to have signed a multi-picture deal… and could be with marvel Studios for some time.
But will he end up playing a very different Captain America? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
‘Captain America: Civil War’ heads to cinemas on 29 April 2016.
