It looks as though the ‘Suicide Squad’ could see the addition of Viola Davis to its ranks after she admitted that she’s in talks for the role of Amanda Waller.
In an interview with Nerd Report, the 49-year-old actress confirmed that she’s up for a role in ‘Suicide Squad’… if her schedule will allow it.
“Not yet,” she said when asked whether she’s started reading the comic books. “I have not started reading them yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for ‘Suicide Squad’.”
Of course, ‘Suicide quad’ is currently one of DC’s most unpredictable upcoming movies… much like the titular squad themselves. Starring Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Will Smith, it’s going to bring some of DC’s greatest villains together on the big screen.
And it looks as though Viola Davis is going to be the woman in charge of them all.
Obviously, it’s not quite a done deal. After all, she still has to work out her schedule in order to meet the filming demands. But with some hugely positive comments about the character of Amanda Waller, it sounds as though it’s only a matter of time.
“I’m fascinated by her,” she said. “I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”
It certainly sounds as though the big screen Amanda Waller will have a more action-packed role than her comic book predecessor. But then, comic book fans will already be well-versed in Waller’s rather murky history.
Starting life as a congressional aide, she’s soon placed in charge of the Suicide Squad – a team of super villains hired to take on covert missions for the US government in exchange for shorter prison sentences. But while they certainly proved to be useful, Waller wasn’t exactly known for her high opinion of the squad….
In fact, in the comic books there is always plenty of friction between herself and other members of the team. Most notably, Amanda and Captain Boomerang frequently failed to see eye-to-eye.
Will her stubbornness remain in the transition to the big screen? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But with Viola Davis behind the squad, it looks as though they’re in good hands.
‘Suicide Squad’ heads to cinemas on 5 August 2016.
