Although CBS is yet to find its Supergirl, it looks as though her costume is ready and waiting… and apparently it’s pretty awesome.
It’s no secret that ‘Supergirl’ is still looking for its lead actress… and while the likes of ‘Hollyoaks’ actress Gemma Atkinson and even Claire Holt have been linked to the role, it seems that they’re yet to sign on the dotted line.
But while the actress may still elude them, it sounds as though CBS has a strong idea of where they want to go…
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the CBS Entertainment Chair Nina Tassler revealed that they’ve already sorted Supergirl’s finer details.
“We have seen the costume,” she said. “Awesome costume.”
Unfortunately, that’s all Tessler was willing to say on the matter of Supergirl’s super suit… and with hints towards Supergirl in the recent ‘Man of Steel’, I can’t help wondering whether the look and feel of her costume will tie into that world.
But it’s not all about the look, and Tessler goes on to explain that Kara Zor-El will be “a very strong, independent young woman”.
“She’s coming into her own,” she added. “She’s dealing with family issues. She’s dealing with work issues. It’s a female empowerment story. If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that … We’re big feminists. It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements. It’s not just her strength, which she does have.”
Obviously, this builds on DC’s efforts to bring strong female characters to our screen in the form of Wonder Woman… and with a positive TV presence as well as a great female hero on the big screen, it looks as though they’re beginning to make strides in terms of female empowerment.
Of course, EW are quick to point out that since the show is heading to CBS, it’s likely to feature some elements of the usual crime procedural… and Tessler points out that while that is certainly true, there are also larger stories at play.
“There will be [crime] cases, but what [executive producers] Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti pitched was a real series arc for her,” she said. “The beauty of it is now with shows like Good Wife and Madam Secretary, you can have serialized story elements woven into a case of the week. She’s a crime solver, so she’s going to have to solve a crime. She’s going to get a bad guy.”
‘Supergirl’ is yet to secure an air date, but is likely for Autumn 2015.
