Star Wars: Rogue One Will Be First Star Wars Spin-Off

Star Wars Rogue One

It’s official – the first ‘Star Wars’ spin-off has been given a title. ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’.

Ever since the ‘Star Wars’ spin-off films were first announced, we’ve been dying to know what they’ll be all about… and perhaps more importantly, what the first spin-off movie will be called.

And now we’ve finally got a hint…

During the Walt Disney Studios annual shareholders meeting in San Francisco, CEO Bob Iger revealed details about this first ‘Star Wars’ spin-off.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ has been written by Chris Weitz… although there’s no mention of writer Gary Whitta, who submitted his first draft at the end of last year. This is likely a gaff, as Weitz has publicly stated that his version is based on Gary Whitta’s original script.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, it looks as though ‘Rogue One’ is based on a story by Industrial light and Magic’s chief creative officer, John Knoll. But what’s it all about?

Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the story will “go well beyond the core star wars saga”. But exactly what that means remains to be seen. Although earlier rumours have suggested that we could get a glimpse of how the Rebel Alliance got their hands on those pesky Death Star plans.

Of course, this title seems to suggest a film based around the infamous Rogue Squadron– the squadron of Rebel Alliance fighter pilots founded by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. It seems likely that this ties into the earlier rumour of an impressive heist to get the Death Star plans. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Iger also revealed some other details about ‘Rogue One’ and confirmed that Felicity Jones has landed a starring role in the film. ‘Rogue One’ begins shooting this summer in London and is set for release on 16 December 2016.

What can we expect from ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’? At this stage, it’s anyone’s guess. Although the recent rumours certainly seem to stack up, nothing has been confirmed. So for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

But more importantly, will Wedge return?

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
