Although Roberto Orci has had a controversial start as (potential) director of ‘Star Trek 3’, it looks as though he has a plan that might just win the fans round…
There’s so far been very few details about the upcoming ‘Star Trek’ sequel… other than the fact that J.J. Abrams won’t be returning to the helm. But with Roberto Orci apparently poised to take his place, it looks as though he may try to accomplish something that Abrams couldn’t quite manage – a reunion between original Trek actors William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.
According to Badass Digest, Orci (who has been confirmed for script-writing duties) has already penned a part for the ever-brilliant William Shatner.
“I have learned that the script for Star Trek 3 includes a scene that reteams Shatner and Nimoy onscreen as Kirk and Spock,” they reveal. That would make it the first time they’ve appeared together since 1991’s ‘Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country’.
But will Shatner agree to star alongside his old friend?
“It would be a pretty huge moment for fans of the franchise,” they added, “and likely the last time we’ll ever see Shatner as James T. Kirk in official continuity.”
Of course, it’s well known that Shatner almost had a chance to appear in the newly-rebooted franchise… although his cameo was dropped from the first movie before shooting began. But will Roberto Orci be able to get him back on our screens?
I can’t help thinking that if Orci has indeed written a part for him (and it makes it through to the final draft) then Shatner would be wise to snatch his hand off. And Paramount should be equally keen to get him back. After all, putting Shatner and Nimoy together on screen would be quite a draw for ‘Star Trek’ fans.
Whether Shatner makes it to the screen is another matter entirely… and with filming still quite some time away, plenty is subject to change. Still, if he does return, let’s hope it’s in a spoken word cameo.
