It’s been twelve long years since we last saw Captain Picard take the helm of the USS Enterprise… but Patrick Steward admits he’d love to return.
He’s perhaps one of the most well-loved captain of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise – Jean Luc Picard brought an air of sophistication to the Next Generation of Trek fans. But while the franchise continues on, it’s been over a decade since we last saw Picard and his crew on our screens.
But would Patrick Stewart consider reprising his role? You bet…
During a Facebook Q&A with Entertainment Weekly, the 74-year-old ‘Star Trek’ captain admitted that he’d love play the role of Jean Luc Picard one again.
“Absolutely… if it were a really good script,” he said. “But, the poor soul is getting old and long in the tooth. He would probably need some help mounting his horse unlike the youthful captain of 30 years ago.”
Of course, the likelihood of seeing a film, or indeed TV series that sits within ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ is rather slim. After all, Paramount Pictures is rather busy with the recently rebooted franchise. And with J.J. Abrams leading the franchise to boldly go where no director has gone before, it looks as though we might be in for a bit of a wait.
But who would Sir Patrick choose to take over from him if Captain Picard was recast? It seems that question has a rather simple answer…
“I would have to say it must be the actor, my son, Daniel Stewart.”
Obviously, the ‘Star Trek’ franchise has gone off in a very different direction lately… taking cues from the Original Series instead of ‘Next Generation’. But could we ever see Picard and Riker back on our screens?
After Paramount rebooted the Original Series, there’s certainly nothing to stop them giving the same treatment to ‘The Next Generation’. But if it did happen, that’s likely to be a whole different stardate.
But personally, I’d love to see Picard back in the chair. And so to Paramount, I say this – Make it so.
