Neill Blomkamp’s Alien Movie Still In The Works?

Neill Blomkamp New Alien

It looks as though Neill Blomkamp’s untitled ‘Alien’ sequel could get made… as the director reveals he’s still working on the project.

Recently, the young sci-fi director turned a lot of heads when concept art from his very own ‘Alien’ sequel was released online. Unfortunately, it looked as though it was all a pipe dream – a project that was unofficial and merely something Blomkamp had been putting together himself.

But would Fox actually make his movie?

During an interview with Uproxx, Blomkamp revealed that he thinks Fox would be open to making his movie… if he decides to push ahead with it.

“There’s a high possibility, a high degree of chance that it happens that I go back and try to get ‘Alien’ made,” he said. “Fox, they would make it. Like, tomorrow. They would make it.”

It certainly sounds as though Blomkamp is rather confident when it comes to Fox’s opinion of his undisclosed ‘Alien’ movie… and perhaps that means that he’s already brought the film to their attention.

Whether or not that’s in any official capacity remains to be seen. But at the very least, it’s likely that they’ve seen his rather impressive concept art. And that may have been the catalyst for some interesting conversations between the director and studio.

But how did it all come about?

“Basically, what happened was, when Chappie got heavily into post-production, I could take my foot off the gas a bit,” he explained. “I was thinking about what I wanted to do next and I’ve been wanting to make an Alien film for like years and years.”

Of course, this isn’t exactly how a high-profile project such as this begins… and it’s certainly a highly unusual approach. But considering fan response to his artwork, it looks as though he may just have hit the jackpot.

“Speaking to Sigourney Weaver, when we were doing Chappie, she set off a bunch of thoughts in my head — I had come up with an idea that didn’t have Sigourney, it was a different idea. But I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy shit, that could actually be really interesting. When I came back to Vancouver, I had an entire year to work on Chappie. And when I wasn’t needed in the edit, I could think about Alien. So, I basically developed an entire movie and I did all of this artwork as well.”

According to Neill himself, there’s still a lot of artwork that we haven’t seen… and we’re unlikely to see it anytime soon if he decides to push ahead with the project. But would Fox really put the film into production?

Blomkamp certainly seems confident that it’s a done deal… and based on the hugely positive reactions we saw to his work, I’d bet that Fox sees the potential too.

But the main stumbling block, it seems, is Neill himself.

Admitting that he has to decide whether or not he’ll push ahead, it’s clear that Blomkamp still holds true to an ideal – to create original films at all cost. And perhaps the thought of tackling a franchise movie is a personally daunting prospect.

But after his rather amazing artwork, I can’t help hoping he gets over it. After all, a Neill Blomkamp ‘Alien’ movie would be something very special indeed.
