Krypton TV Series In The Works

Krypton

After some speculation, it looks as though Superman prequel ‘Krypton’ will be heading to Syfy… and it’s being written by none other than David S. Goyer.

But if you were expecting a Superman cameo, you’ve come to the wrong place.

The series is set on Krypton years before its destruction, telling the story of the House of El. Essentially, the series follows Superman’s grandfather as he attempts to bring change to the planet of Krypton – turning a planet which has fallen into disarray into a home worthy of the Man of Steel.

Of course, ‘Krypton’ has been rumoured for some time… and while it sounds like a great idea, I can’t help wondering if it’s really been thought through. I mean, ‘Man of Steel’ was a good film. But I always felt that the sections on Krypton were a bit much.

Do we really need an entire series devoted to characters we know nothing about?

“Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracised,” reads the official description. “This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.”

Don’t get me wrong, it’ll be interesting to see the planet which produced Superman… and ultimately, the events that led his father to break away from Kryptonian tradition in order to have a son.

But while ‘Smallville’ really worked as a Superman prequel, I can’t help feeling that this is more of a cynical cash-in. I mean, how much do we really need to know about the House of El? How much does Superman know?

‘Krypton’ will head to Syfy as a one-hour pilot and will be written by both David S. Goyer and Ian Goldberg. But will it get picked up for a full series? That’s another matter entirely.

What do you think of a Superman prequel set on Krypton? Does it really make sense in the wider DC universe? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
