Justin Lin Will Direct Star Trek 3

Justin Lin Star Trek 3

It looks as though the search for a ‘Star Trek 3’ director is finally over, as Justin Lin is revealed to helm the upcoming Trek sequel.

It’s been a tough couple of months for ‘Star Trek’ fans after writer Roberto Orci was apparently offered the chance to direct… and subsequently dropped out. But while plenty of names stepped up to throw their name into the ring, it looks as though ‘Fast and Furious 6’ director Justin Lin has landed the coveted job.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the 43-year-old director has already been offered the director’s chair following Roberto Orci’s exit.

“Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot just set Justin Lin to direct Star Trek 3, filling the biggest open directing assignment out there with the filmmaker credited with reviving the Fast & Furious series,” they said. “Lin helmed four of the films that grossed $1.9 billion in worldwide box office.”

Of course, Lin isn’t the first name to be attached to the upcoming ‘Star Trek’ sequel… and after J.J. Abrams left to make the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ movie, his writer pal Roberto Orci soon found himself in charge of the bridge.

But it seems that wasn’t meant to be… and after much criticism, Roberto Orci left the project. Even if he is still on board to produce. And then came the speculation, as Paramount Pictures was left to find another director to take the helm of their flagship sci-fi franchise.

Although the likes of Jonathon Frakes and Duncan Jones found themselves linked to the upcoming ‘Star Trek 3’ sequel, it looks as though Justin Lin was approached… and will seemingly take the captain’s chair.

But does he have the time to commit to ‘Star Trek’ as well as the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise?

“Lin was courted to return to the Fast & Furious franchise to do a multi-part finale,” explains Deadline. “But I am not sure whether that will be in the cards in light of the Star Trek job.”

Whether or not he manages to juggle the two projects remains to be seen. But one thing’s for certain – this is an exciting time for ‘Star Trek’ fans and could see the franchise shift further towards the realms of action adventure.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
