John Williams To Record Star Wars VII Music In Los Angeles

It looks as though ‘Star Wars’ composer John Williams will be breaking with tradition… as he prepares to record the ‘Star Wars VII’ soundtrack in Los Angeles.

The legendary John Williams has provided the soundtrack for ever ‘Star Wars’ saga movie to date… and it’s no secret that he’s preferred to work with the London Symphony Orchestra on these projects.

But for the first time, a ‘Star Wars’ soundtrack will be recorded in the United States.

Announced online via the official Star Wars website, it looks as though John Williams will be recording ‘The Force Awakens’ in Los Angeles.

“John Williams is currently hard at work composing the score for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will be recorded in Los Angeles,” they revealed.

“For the recording of the score, Williams will work with members of the superb freelance orchestra with which he’s recorded numerous film scores over the years. The music will be recorded over several months while working in tandem with the film’s editorial and special effects teams on the West Coast.”

Of course, previous films in the ‘Star Wars’ saga have been recorded in the famous Abbey Road studios with the London Symphonic Orchestra… but this time around, it seems that John Williams has opted for his very own freelancers orchestra.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with the very best musicians in both the U.K. and the U.S.,” said Williams. “The London Symphony Orchestra has consistently performed with great artistry on all six of the prior films in the Star Wars saga, and I will be forever grateful for their commitment and dedication.  Equally, it has been my honor to have worked with my brilliant colleagues in Los Angeles, and always appreciate the invaluable contribution they’ve made to my scores and to those of other composers.”

What does this mean for the galaxy far, far away? Well for one thing, it’s perhaps a very appropriate break with tradition. Appointing John Williams seems to have been the obvious choice when it comes to a new ‘Star Wars’ film.

But with J.J. Abrams seemingly aiming to recapture the old magic while bringing something new, it seems appropriate to see the same apply to the film’s soundtrack.

John Williams has been on board the ‘Star Wars’ saga since the very beginning. But even he is willing to mix things up a bit for the next generation.

Let’s just hope it sounds as excellent as the previous films.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.

For sentimental reasons, it would have been nice if Force Awakens’ soundtrack was recorded with the same orchestra and in the same studio as the previous 6 films. But, it’s a safe bet that this movie’s soundtrack will be just as magical as the others. I’m curious about any new musical motifs Williams is composing for the new characters.
