Independence Day 2 Will Star Jessie Usher

Jessie Usher - Independence Day 2

Although Will Smith won’t return for ‘Independence Day 2’, it looks as though they’ve found a replacement… and he’ll be joined by Jeff Goldblum and Liam Hemsworth.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 23-year-old actor Jessie Usher has been cast in the leading role in the ‘Independence Day’ sequel.

“Jessie Usher, the lead of Starz’s series Survivor’s Remorse, has been cast in Fox’s sequel Independence Day 2,” they revealed. “Liam Hemsworth has also been cast in in a lead role and Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role from the original.”

Unfortunately, details of the long-anticipated project remain tightly under wraps. But it looks as though we’ve at least got some idea of which role Jessie Usher will be playing.

“Independence Day 2 is a big get for Usher, who will play a central character in the new film as the son of Smith’s character. Smith’s role in the first blockbuster helped establish him as a star, kicking his career up to the next level.”

That’s right – Will Smith may not return, but it looks as though ‘Independence Day 2’ will focus on his character’s son. Of course, the original ‘independence Day’ was one of Smith’s breakout film roles… and it seems that Jessie Usher is keen to repeat that.

After all, Usher is a relatively unknown actor, having appeared in the TV show ‘Survivor’s Remorse’ and little else.

But one big question remains – what will happen to Captain Hiller’s son?

Unfortunately, that remains unclear. But it’s said that Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore may return alongside Jeff Goldblum… and with Liam Hemsworth also set to join them, it makes a rather hefty supporting cast.

Of course, nothing is official until confirmed by the studio… so whether or not this pans out remains to be seen.

But I can’t help thinking that with Roland Emmerich returning to the director’s chair, this could well be the hit sequel we’ve all been waiting for.

‘Independence Day 2’ heads to cinemas on 1 July 2016.
