It’s finally official – Ben Affleck will direct and star in his own ‘Batman’ movie.
Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara revealed plans for a ‘Batman’ solo film during this year’s CinemaCon… and confirmed that Ben Affleck will also be directing the project.
“[Batman V Superman] set up a great foundation for our DC slate, which includes at least ten movies through 2020,” he explained. “I’m also excited to know that we will be working with Ben Affleck on a stand-alone Batman movie.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the project – rumours of a solo ‘Batman’ film have been doing the rounds since Ben Affleck was cast in ‘Batman V Superman’.
But now it’s finally been confirmed.
And details of his contract appear to have been revealed.
“He’s contracted to do at least Justice League 1 and 2, so at least three times wearing the cape,” said WME-IMG co-CEO Patrick Whitesell in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s a script that he’s written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that’s out there as an option.”
And it certainly sounds like a safe bet for the studio.
Although ‘Batman v Superman’ has failed to inspire the critics, it seems to be doing relatively well at the box office… although perhaps not quite as well as predicted.
But the real selling point? Ben Affleck’s Batman is already proving popular.
When will we see this new ‘Batman’ movie?
For now, it’s unclear. There’s been no official release date revealed, but there are two unknown DC movies slated for October 2018 and November 2019. It seems likely that the upcoming ‘Batman’ film will nab one of them… and my money is on 2018 – after all, they want to hang around, considering the positive reaction to Affleck’s Batman.
But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
