General Leia will return in Star Wars 9.

After the untimely death of Star Wars legend Carrie Fisher, it looked as though General Leia’s time had come to an end… but it now looks as though that’s not quite the case.

Carrie’s brother Todd Fisher has confirmed that he and her daughter Billie Lourd have already given Lucasfilm permission to use pre-existing footage for the upcoming Star Wars 9.

“[Billie and I] were like, ‘yes, how do you take her out of it?’ and the answer is you don’t… She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful.”

“I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue… I think the people deserve to have her. She’s owned by them.”

And I can’t help thinking this is the right move.

Although General Leia only appeared briefly in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it’s been reported that her role was substantially increased for the upcoming sequel, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Of course, Carrie had already completed her scenes for Star Wars 8… but it left her appearance in Star Wars 9 hanging in the balance.

Now, it sounds as though General Leia will return, using pre-existing footage to complete her Star Wars story. Fans will be pleased to hear that this footage will reportedly be used without CGI interference – and that means no uncanny appearances a la Rogue One.

How will Leia’s story end? For now, we have to wait and see.

But it’ll soon continue in Star Wars 8.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will star Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher.

Rian Johnson both wrote and directed the movie.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi heads to cinemas on 15 December 2017.
